Tennis Tournaments: Grand Slam Tournaments

Interested in following tennis, but not sure where to start?  Tennis is a fascinating, fast-paced sport, and you will find many opportunities to wager on tennis on the best UK betting sites.  But with so many tennis tournaments held each year around the world, it can be hard to know where to begin.  One idea is to start with the Grand Slam tournaments.

What are the Grand Slam tournaments?  Also known as the “majors,” these are the four biggest tennis events which are held every single year.  They include:

• Australian Open (mid-January)
• French Open (May and June)
• Wimbledon (June and July)
• US Open (August and September)

These four events offer the most ranking points and prize money and also garner the most attention from the press.  That means that you will find a lot of information which you can use for betting purposes - though you should also be aware that the press can hype up certain players, which can be misleading.

If a player manages to win all four tournaments during a single year for men’s, women’s, men’s and women’s singles, or mixed doubles, that achievement is also referred to as a Grand Slam.  If  player manages to win all four tournaments but not during the course of a single year, that is referred to as a “Non-Calendar Year Grand Slam.”  If the player can throw in a gold medal from the Olympics, then it is called a “Golden Grand Slam” or “Golden Slam.”  If the player wins the ATP World Tour Finals and WTA Tour Championships as well, it is a “Super Slam.”
