Tennis Tournaments: Wimbledon
If you are just starting to follow tennis, you probably will be keeping up with the four annual events included in the Grand Slam, one of which is the Wimbledon.
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament anywhere on the planet, and is regarded as the most prominent. Since its inception in 1877, the event has taken place each year at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club located in Wimbledon, London. The tournament begins in late June and spans a two-week period into early July.
The crowning events in the tournament are known as the Ladies’ Singles Final and the Gentlemen’s’ Singles Final. These fall on the second Saturday and Sunday of July each year. Other key events include the Gentlemen’s Doubles and Ladies’ Doubles as well as Mixed Doubles. Additionally there are five junior events and five invitational events.
At present, Wimbledon is the only major tennis competition which is still played on grass. The others are now all played on hardcourt.
