Types of Golf Bets

Thinking of wagering on the European tour or another golf tournament?  Betting on golf adds an extra dimension of excitement to the sport, and it can also be very profitable if you win on a long-shot.  What types of wagers can you place?  While there are many different types of golf bets, here are the most common ones:

• Outright bets:  This is what it is called when you wager on the golfer who is going to win the tournament.  For many minor tournaments, odds will only be set on golfers within several days of the event.  For major tournaments, however, initial odds will be posted well in advance, sometimes with months to go.  Those odds will of course be adjusted over time, so you have to keep up with the changes.  There are variations on futures bets as well; you may bet on the winner of the tournament, or you might bet that a golfer will finish in one of the top places.

• Head-to-head bets.  Here you are wagering on the relative performance of two golfers.  You are trying to figure out which golfer will have the lower score.  If you guess right, you win.  If you guess wrong, you lose.  This is a perfect wager if you know a lot about two golfers who are going head-to-head, but don’t have a clue how they will end the tournament in terms of overall scores.

• Prop bets.  Prop bets in golf are miscellaneous wagers not related to the outcome of the tournament.  For instance, you might wager on how many events a golfer will win this year.  There are numerous other types of prop bets too, and some of them are quite odd and have nothing to do with golf itself.  You can even sometimes wager on things like what colour shirt a golfer will wear to an event. 

What types of wagers you should place depends on what you are trying to get out of them and what you know about the sport and the players.  If you are wagering for fun, then you might enjoy taking some silly prop bets.  If you are serious about golf wagering, however, you should probably stay away from wagering on shirt colours. 

One of the great things about  golf is that online betting sites have a huge variety of bets you can place on this exciting sport.  If you want to make a short term wager on a single round, you can do it.  If you prefer a long-term wager at the start of the season on the winner of a major tournament, you can do that too, months in advance.  Or if you do not know want to guess who will win or lose, but you are certain one golfer will outperform another, you can place a head-to-head bet and ignore traditional futures bets.

Whatever types of wagers you are thinking of placing, the more you know about the game and the more closely you follow the golfers, the better your chances of winning will be.  If you win a long-shot on an underdog, you can rake in some serious cash!
