How Many Sports Should You Specialise In?

If you have an account at an online betting site, you know that many websites offer dozens or even hundreds of different types of events for you to wager on.  This is a big selling point for a lot of these sites.  It is exciting to think that there is an abundance of opportunity out there waiting for you.  But how many different types of games and matches should you realistic try wagering on?  Should you wager on just one sport, or should you diversify and bet on as many as possible?

There is no single right answer to this question, because a lot depends on your personality, your existing knowledge, and where your interests lie.  It is generally wise however to avoid the temptation to bet on too many different types of sports.  You may believe that professional bettors are so good at what they do that they are able to make money on all different kinds of games and matches, but the reverse is actually the case.  Most professional gamblers are very focused, and many make a living betting on just one sport or a couple of different sports. 

Becoming an expert in something requires that you get specific.  Think about it.  For every sport you add to your repertoire, you are spreading yourself more thin, and cutting your time into ever smaller slices.  It is hard enough to become a true expert on any one sport; if you are studying two, you are cutting your time in half.  If you are studying four, you are halving your time with each again.  As it is, you probably already wish you had more time to study and learn.  So don’t make things harder on yourself than they need to be!

That isn’t to say that you must focus on a single sport.  In fact, that may not work out for you at all.  Sports seasons do not run through the entire year, after all, and you may want to study at least a couple of different sports so that you have something to bet on during the off season for your preferred sport.  It is wise though to continue focusing on both sports throughout the year, not just the active one.  Why?  It will give you a huge competitive advantage, since you will be aware of background developments that the casual bettor is completely incognisant of. 

So what is the best advice?  If you are just starting out, start with a single sport.  You may want to stick with just one sport, but if you find yourself itching for action during the off season, try selecting just a single other sport to focus on.  But do not forget about your off-season sport during this time—continue paying attention to background developments.  This will give you an edge when that sport is back in season.  Whatever you do, avoid the temptation to bet on dozens of different sports.  Focus on becoming a true expert in just a few sports, and you will achieve much better results!
