NHL Lockout ends
It was starting to look like the 113-day lockout would never end, but the NHL and its Players Association finally came to an agreement meaning that hockey season could begin.
Although they had plenty of reasons to be disappointed, it didn’t take long for the fans to come around and when the pucks of the first games dropped on Saturday, it was clear that everyone was just happy to be back home, in the excitement of hockey.
At a lot of games, team owners and NHL officials made apologies for the lengthy wait while in Los Angeles 10 lucky fans got to escort the Stanley Cup in the Staples Center.
The joys of doing a victory lap with the cup would be overshadowed by the end of the evening as the Kings suffered a pretty extreme loss of 5-2 (considering they never conceded more than 4 goals in their championship run) to the Blackhawks.
Generally speaking, it was pretty clear that the lack of activity had led to most teams collecting some dust both on an individual player level and with regards to teamwork. With a shortened regular season lasting only 48 games, there won’t be a lot of room for error, and even a small number of missed games due to injuries could drastically change the way teams will perform.
Regarding the results of these early games, the losing finalists of last year, the New Jersey Devils, beat the New York Islanders 2-1 while betting favorites the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated their bitter rivals the Flyers 3-1 in front of a packed Philadelphia arena.
The Maple Leafs who haven’t made the playoffs for 7 seasons and who haven’t take the Stanley Cup since 1967, beat the Canadiens 2-1 giving their fans hope that the post-season drought may have come to an end.
Another team suffering the post-season drought, the Edmonton Oilers, also started off on their right skates beating the Canucks 3-2 in a shootout.
