Types of Sports Bets: Pleasers
Once you are familiar with your basic US straight bet, you can learn about other types of US bets like pleasers. Maybe you have also read about teaser bets. Teasers consist of a number of straight bets and/or totals combined into a single wager. A pleaser is similar to a teaser (as you might guess from the name), except that the way you adjust the lines is very different. When you enter into a teaser, you are able to adjust the lines in your favour. You boost the spread of the underdog or decrease the spread for the favourite. You get a lower payout for a teaser than you would for a parlay for this reason.
A pleaser is the exact opposite. The lines are adjusted against you. The spread of the favourite is increased instead of decreased. The spread for the underdog is decreased instead of increased. Your risk is higher for a pleaser than it would be for a teaser or a parlay. Why would you enter into a pleaser? If you do actually manage to win, you get a higher payout. The payout for a pleaser exceeds the payout for the comparable teaser or even the comparable parlay.
The points you add or subtract against the line may vary, but 6½ to 7-point pleasers are very common. You may also find 3-, 6-, or 10-point pleasers. Occasionally, you may run into pleasers with different point spreads. You may also encounter variations on pleasers, like progressive or multi-chance pleasers. A progressive pleaser is just like an ordinary pleaser except that you do not need to win all of your selections. You receive a consolation payout for wrong selections. After you meet the minimum number of correct selections, your payout increases with each subsequent correct selection. Multi-chance pleasers also allow you to win with incorrect selections. Once you reach the minimum number of correct selections, though, you get the payout right away (instead of the payout continuing to increase with each subsequent winner).
With a standard pleaser, the payoff depends on how many teams are included in your pleaser wager. Should there be a tie, the wager is reduced to the next level down in terms of payouts based on a smaller number of teams. As with parlays and teasers, you often need to call in to customer service to make these types of wagers or make them online. Each betting site has its own specific rules concerning how pleasers are made.
