Here are a few examples of simple horse racing systems:

• Bet against short prices.  Short-priced favourites are often overvalued.  This is a simple system where you bet on the second-named horse in the pre-post betting market instead of the short-priced favourite. 

• Bet on the horse with the biggest weight concession in a handicap race.  The idea here is that the horse with the biggest handicap is also the one with the biggest advantage in his class.

• Bet on course specialists.  These are horses that have won on the course previously, especially those that have done so more than one time.  The logic behind this system is that you are not only betting on a horse that has demonstrated racing prowess on this particular track before, but also backing a horse that may count this track as a favourite.  In other words, the horse may be more motivated.  They may also be undervalued by the market if they have not been performing highly elsewhere recently.  Their expertise on the track may be overlooked.  This can be a profitable bet if it works out.

• Bet on the youngest handicapper running in a race, so long as there is only one qualifier.  These horses are often undervalued as well, because they lack experience.  They often have incredible potential, however, and if you wager correctly on that potential, you can win big.

These are just a few examples of simple horse racing systems.  There are dozens of other equally simple systems out there, and many more complicated systems as well.  Systems may take a variety of different factors into account, including the performance of a horse, a jockey, a trainer, the location of the race, the distance, handicapping, and much, much more. 

How do you decide on a system which is right for you?  Your goal is to find a system that you understand and know how to apply properly again and again for excellent results.  The better your intuitive grasp on the system, the better.  Some punters prefer simpler systems, while others prefer more complicated ones.  Go with something that makes sense to you, and remember to test it first.  Check out historical data and figure out if the system would have been profitable.  Then test it on paper with current races before you go live with it.  Remember, you do not have to trade a system entirely mechanically.  You can bring your own discretion into play.  How much discretion you use is something else you will have to test before you can pick the best approach.
